You'll still see them! I don't want to say too much for fear of giving anything away, but they'll be there. They're just not main characters. I still loved the book, and I loved how they got wound into it. I wish Diana Wynne Jones had done another one where they were absolutely main characters, but I'll take any and all the Howl and Sophie sneaking in I can get. ;)
The Ghibli movie is great for that. I think it lured quite a few more people into the fandom. They're definitely different, but I love both the movie and the book for what they are.
Howl's definitely closer in the movie to what he is in the book -- just younger-looking, and without the green eyes. I miss Sophie's red hair, though.
