Shinji is pre-canon, as in 'freshly joined SEES and my ultimate goal is to see if he can avoid Doing A Manslaughter.' Because of the nature of the game, you're not bound to this canon point (or even timeline; she hasn't turned up yet, but I'm ride-or-die FemC timeline, for the record); in-timeline friends would be great but are not Required.
Also, thanks to the current network glitch, he just got a big lead on Strega's existence, so that's a Thing. (Said glitch may also go a good way toward accomplishing my goal up there. XD)
