Very fair concerns here! I'll admit that the flavor of horror the game has tended to employ so far does often mix and match with rather gallows humor elements, when we're not going a more full-blown trauma-induced drama route; for example, during our Battle Royale event, characters remaining on the ship and not actively killing each other on the island were treated to video feeds on every tv on the ship broadcasting constant highlight videos of the various fights and deaths to the tune of...generic background muzak and slapstick sound-effects. Naturally most characters still sincerely engaged this event with the trauma response it fittingly brought about, but the overarching tone tends to be very irreverent in these sorts of ways all the same!
I'll also be candid in the fact that while you can opt out of throwing your character directly into the thick of particularly nasty excursions, the chances are still pretty high you'll likely need to ICly acknowledge the fact that the event's happening all the same--the broadcasted Battle Royale bit above is an example in that sense too, and it seems to me that there will be times going forward where the ship undergoes events that may end up very difficult to not ICly engage on some level.
As for the dice rolls, you've got it about right! They mainly seem to crop up during events to determine the fates and general luck of characters over the course of events, and as stated in the rules all dice rolls are generally final. To give some examples of how this RNG aspect has worked in events so far: This event post details the arrival of an NPC who eventually attempts to sink the entire ship, and after players sign up with their character if they want to attempt the engage the NPC, dice rolls were applied to decide whether diplomacy or violence is used, as well as whether the method ends up prevailing. (The results of the rolls were hashed on the mod plurk, but on this occasion diplomacy was rolled and prevailed!) If all dice rolls had failed, though, the NPC would have sunk the ship and killed every single character aboard without exception. Then there's this event post for the Battle Royale, where RNG determined who would end up living or dying among the characters signed up by players; iirc there were coin tosses for the results of the first two days, and then d20 rolls to determine who would emerge the royale victor on the final day (Natsuno Yuuki ended up rolling a 20). Players could freely plot out exactly how their characters would ultimately die in this case, however, so long as the result aligned with the mod-determined roll!
So, yeah! If any of these aspects would be a deal breaker for you it's totally understandable--sorry for getting a bit long-winded here aha, I wanted to be as frank as possible so you could make a pretty informed judgment call on whether the game would really be a fit for you! And whether you decide to give it a proper whirl or not, I appreciate you popping in with some questions all the same! It's always so nice to hear about people still getting into Abyss so recently too, it's a wonderful game...! (At the risk of being real biased lol--) And Luke is a great character pick for rp, too. I'd def love to see more of him around DWRP in general, whether it's in this game or anywhere else! c:
