Subnautica is a survival exploration themed game (though they have gotten enough recourses to be less survival and more exploration) with a plot that you can influence through monthly missions! The mods are very friendly and the player base is nice and easy to work with. The game is on the slow end but generally has monthly mingle posts.
Everything takes place on a mostly water planet (like the video game of the same name!) and there is an underwater base, along with currently an island above it! There are several mysteries such as how people got there, what is going on in the universe (some sort of intergalactic war!) and how sentient is the planet!
Though the game is slow, there are still people who can be fast, generally it's not too hard to set your own pace for things.
