I absolutely adore Penny Dreadful (and even have a years-old Vanessa journal I never did anything with) and I've almost tagged you before with this character.
I don't know if you're familiar with Dragon Age at all but Morrigan is a "witch of the wilds." She's a shapeshifting mage who grew up detached from most of society, toying with templars who hunted mages, and learned from her (literally) legendary mother Flemeth that love is nothing but weakness and she can only rely on herself. She believes her mother intends to possess her body and does everything she can separate herself, even at one point asking a friend to kill Flemeth (who turns into a dragon and doesn't exactly die when killed). I have info in her journal if you're interested in more but I feel like these characters could be interesting and complicated if you'd like to bounce off her.
