bad times at the el royale, crosscanon

OFFERING:
Miles Miller. tl;dr: ~24 years old, canon is set early in 1969. Happy Indiana-bred farm boy enlisted during Vietnam, had a pretty terrible time. After a presumably also-difficult time returning to the states he drifted west, where he currently works as the sole staffer of a dying, formerly-prestigious motor lodge. Part of this job, to Miles' chagrin, is utilizing creepy back passages and bugged rooms to film blackmail material for his bosses, whom he does not know and likely never met. Big PTSD haver, big guilt haver, has picked up a drug problem to cope. Remorseful, anxious, polite, a nice person at his core.

SEEKING:
— memes! psls would also be amazing but I'm happy testing how characters + styles vibe more casually first, multiple threads with only a loose sense of continuity, anything on that spectrum. I default to picking a topic or general direction and letting the characters get there themselves over beat-for-beat plotting, but I can go more granular as needed.

— crosscanon!! I don't expect canonmates, and Miles' default state is pretty isolated so there's a lot of gaps to fill. Mentors (actually helpful or not, or even one-sided in either direction are all fun), friends, coworkers (his shitty job or au'd into yours, either way he's pretty shackled to his work and I think other people in that mix would be interesting, be it positive or negative), people who browbeat him and boss him around, people he looks on scornfully and is tempted to needle at, maybe contacts from before or during the war that he'd since lost touch with, people he feels very conflicted about spying on(!!!). Sky's the limit.

potential points of overlap / easily-justifiable crossed paths / ic interest include: fellow 60s-set characters, veterans, celebrities, politicians, criminals both grand and petty, priests (or any figure of importance in a spiritual sense, but his immediate reaction will vary by familiarity), fellow addicts, people who are Good At Violence and aren't happy about it, people who are Good At Violence and are happy about it, less passive types that will push or walk over him, empathetic helper types, those with dramatically lost innocence, the chronically guilty.

— obligatory shipping note: it's not my priority but I'm not going to pretend it wouldn't be fun! presently I'm leaning m/f with him, probably 20+, ftb as necessary. he's new so I don't have a defined type or vibe in mind, but broadly speaking I fuck with slow burns / ust / pining, rapid initial bonding born of both parties being caught up in dangerous shit, confidants, bed sharing, fake dating, all your hurt-comforty stuff is good. Enemies or rivals to lovers is fun, if we can swing a justification for the initial dislike. Love an opposites attract, love an odd couple.

and some spitballing about settings and content:

—— canon stuff. standard interactions in the hotel (normal stays, political dealings, crime, etc), divergence (I'm not above wanting a fix-it, my boy got a raw deal, but I'd also just love exploring different variations on the events of the film -- what might have changed with an additional character present, or some new set of convoluted agendas working against each other, so on), or post-film (handwaved survival on his part, and what the fuck that would possibly look like for him!!!!)
—— sci-fi / supernatural aus. The hotel as the site of some weird experiments to justify things like a time loop, superpower stuff, mind control, freaky bioweapons, so on. Alien encounters in the desert. Fallout-style post-apocalypses. Miles as a ghost (in either building-haunting or free-roaming hitchhiiker flavor), Miles as your local exhausted spooky-estate groundskeeper or footman, Miles who didn't go to war but was bit by a werewolf and has been grappling with that, etc. There's a thread here about voyeurism and secret-keeping that could skew a little lovecrafty or otherwise demonic if I kept tugging at it. Also the hotel as some kind of Twilight Zone-esque liminal space outside time / purgatory would be sick as hell. (Also very into fantasy, I just have fewer pre-loaded ideas for it beyond dropping him into a given canon.)
—— crime / intrigue / action type shit. Kind of broad because I don't know exactly how to articulate it, but like....Coen brothers stuff. A good crime caper. People accidentally ending up in way over their heads with some kind of criminal body or conspiracy. Heists, cover-ups, faking your own death, witnessing something you shouldn't have and fleeing or trying to capitalize on it, all that fun stuff.
—— basically anything that best facilitates contact I'm game for. His standard hotel setting, auing him into your canon (I emphatically do not care how much the genre or setting may differ, provided the major beats of his backstory can fit in or be substituted), combining canons, fake jamjar (would be especially fun to throw in jamjar style events a la memshares), isekai him, literally whatever.

PREFS/MISC:
— present tense brackets is my default, but I'm fine matching prose!
— est, primarily free in the evenings, good to backtag forever
— available via pms, but I can jump to plurk / discord later on
— idk down the road a game might be cool
