June EMP Meme

ENABLEMEPLZ

meme goes up on the Second Saturday of every month

FOR GAME ADS:

Put an ad up with the characters / crew / pairings / fetish you want for your game under the correct game header. This meme is primarily going to be focused on DWRP games but IJ and LJ games are allowed.

PLEASE NOTE A RULE CHANGE HERE. ABSOLUTELY NO obnoxious coding (no font size > size 4 or 3 "big" tags, no oversized banners (they must be 250px in height or less), no blinking text, no obnoxious table html that doesn't collapse easily, no sparklies, no large pictures). Use all the colors you like, but please remember 3 "big" tags is the limit and that's only for headers or title text rather than for all the text in an ad.

FOR GAME QUESTIONS:

RPers interested in a game can create a header for the game and ask questions about that game that aren't easy to find on faqs, such as the actual pace vs. what's listed/what kind of plots are run/if the game leans more towards plotty or slice of life/if a game leans more towards network or logs, etc. Both anon questions and anon answers are welcome in this section just like in the rest of the meme.

This thread is not for speaking about wank or drama in a game. There are anoncomms that exist for that. This thread is specifically for general questions about a game that rpers want to get perspective on from players already in the game. Answers can be slightly negative (such as saying app response is slow or that the plots are repetitive or similar things) but this should at least be worded politely. Unnecessary vitriol, any mention of personal drama or wank, or mod teams/individual mods/players being singled out, will be either frozen or screened (based on what seems right based on the content).

FOR CHARACTER ADS:

Put up an ad about the characters you are offering. For PSL ads, there is a separate subthread but for character ads for games, post directly to the meme post. Others will comment to you with the games/casts they want you to join.

There is a "Find a Castmate" section, where you can talk about a cast you play in at a game, and try to lure people to join it. Not all games post to the meme or have a "wanted" section, so players that want to tempt people to their cast on their own can use this section for it. Please format this the same as the PSL section, where you post your character's canons in your subject. For the actual text of the ad you must use the "Find a Castmate" form provided at the bottom of this post so that these ads don't get huge. When listing who's currently in a cast, please do this in sentence form (with commas) rather than in list form.

There is a "Find Crosscanon" section, where you can talk about a character you play and and desired crosscanon for that character. Please make sure this is not too generalized a search, because just wanting general crosscanon can be accomplished with the other sections of the meme. This is for specific characters or character types you're looking for. In the subject, please list the "Looking for [canon you're looking for]" rather than your character's canon. If looking for a character type, list the character type in as few words as possible. Do not make the subject huge or I'll screen your comment. For the actual text of the ad you must use the "Find Crosscanon" form provided at the bottom of this post so that these ads don't get huge. This section is only for game crosscanon as in the psl section people can list their preferences.

Examples of crosscanon you can search for: You play The Flash from DC Comics and your dream CR is fellow speedster Quicksilver from Marvel. Or you might play a witch and want cr with other witches in general. Or maybe you play a good character messed up by evil parents and want to play against a villain character you know has evil parents, because you know it'd lead to some interesting negative CR.

ABSOLUTELY NO obnoxious coding, with the same rules as the Game Ads Section above.

If you're recommending a game to someone, try to match your suggestion to their needs. It's okay if part of your game rec is copy-pasted (such as what the game's about), but at least some part of the rec must be personalized to their ad. Try not to recommend the same game to every single ad, either. Ad spam that isn't individualized in some way will also be frozen or screened. Keep in mind this needs to be more specific than "this game has easy AC like you're asking for but meets none of your other requirements." Make sure you're advertising games that might click with that specific character, where a few elements fit what they're looking for. You should be thinking about the story reasons of how the character might click with the game.

IN GENERAL:

Don't be a dick. This isn't one of the anoncomms, so any snide comments or unnecessary commentary on the RP plans of others will be frozen or screened.

Important note: IP logging has turned on due to multiple instances past and present of problem players trying to return to the dwrp community via emp after being banned other places, so I'll be IP logging from now on, and will compare notes with the rpa and wg mods (as well as game mods) where appropriate if it seems like someone that has been mass banned. I will not pay attention to IPs otherwise. I don't care what people like playing or who's who. So please feel comfortable to keep doing your thing, anon or otherwise. The knowledge will only be used for really egregious problem cases.

Hello, and thank you for responding! I will make an over all reply addressing issues from the various comments, but will reply individually as well.

Everland currently has one short story out, and one novel in beta draft, which I have been given access to. The author has given permission for this game to run and is an approachable resource for world building. (There are limits on the canon characters and a few smaller locations, but nothing restrictive for DWRP) Knowledge of the source story is not required to play or to mod, especially not the unpublished novel! I only put that in so that there was transparency over the ownership of the base world.

As to PG and G ratings, I see multiple questions on that topic and will do a catchall response in addition to this as I said above. This is all addressed/will be addressed in the still WIP FAQ/Rules section. In the areas where the border between PG and PG-13 is grey and unclear, it will mostly fall to player consent. If all players in the scene are okay with a little more violence that would be fine. The restrictions, as spelled out in the rules are basically: swearing should be censored. Romantic scenes that include getting undressed or anything not PG acceptable should be FTB. Violence is okay so long as all players are okay with it, but extreme violence is not. (So someone gets stabbed, fine if all players are fine with it, someone getting mutilated slowly/tortured is not), bloodshed and death will be allowable as long as there are CW or TWs in the subject line, but graphic descriptions of the wounds would not be.

I am willing to take on the lions share of the NPCing, and will set the co-mods requirements for it based on their comfort level. At least one or two is what I would like, but if that is a hard no for someone who otherwise wants to help then we can work around that and I'll just shoulder more of the NPCing. A lot of this is vague because it comes down to the comfort levels of my fellow mods. I don't want to set anything in stone that would turn away someone who would have a fantastic time helping with this setting!

Thank you again for your reply and questions, I look forward to hearing from you again if you respond!

da here, but i've got to ask you a question about this while you're here doing Q&A.

have any players actually come to you and expressed their burning need for a game that treats it's players like they're 5 years old? did you put up a poll somewhere that revealed to you that there's an untapped market of dwrpers nostalgic for the old antiviolence field from milliway's? i mean, different strokes for different folks and all that, but it seems to me that what you're trying here is so narrow in its focus that there won't be any market for it. you don't want this to be a game where players with bad histories can start over in, you want it to be that AND a game that is inclusive to CRAUs and canon OCs (two notoriously problematic character types) AND you want it to also be a game so squeaky clean that even BS&P TV censors brought straight to us from the 1990s would approve.

see the problem? there's just too many hurdles here you're trying to clear at once. someone might be willing to give problem players a second chance, or give CRAUs a second chance, or give a patronizing kid's TV setting a chance (I'll point out here that even other "kiddie" games like Route 29 allowed swearing, for example). but the chances of you finding someone who is willing to entertain all of these restrictions, besides you yourself, is probably going to be a very small pool indeed.

Hello, Da. I do not think I know you, but am pleased to meet you and appreciate you responding!

I do not think that this is treating players like children and I am very sorry if it comes across that way. I am unfamiliar with Miliways, and am presuming from context that it was a game a while back? I am not trying to be super squeaky clean so much as I am trying to avoid triggering people. Myself included to be completely honest.

As to interest, I did get some interest when asking around small scale (on my own plurk and through the game's mod plurk which was replurkable) and did have some people interested in NPCing, helping out, and generally playing. None of the people were up for full on modding, which is fair enough. It is a lot of work.

As to canon OCs and CRAUs... I have met a lot of players who have played one or the other and have done really well with it. I also enjoy canon OCs on occasion and honestly have a lot of characters with CRAU because their arcs in a game ended, or their game ended, but I am not ready to stop playing them yet. I want to see more places willing to accept those kinds of characters, and believe in trying to be the change I want to see in the world. Yes, there are some cases where those kinds of characters can be problematic. But there are some characters in nearly every category who can be problematic. If we disregard all character categories that have a few potentially problematic individuals... what would any of us be able to play? I would rather take things on a case by case basis.

That said, canon OCs and CRAU can be exactly that. Taken on a case by case basis. We mods would have to decide in advance enough of what can be said so that players have guidelines to know that if theirs is one that needs to be looked at individually they are not being singled out. So long as we can make that clear, I am open to mod discussions on individual characters that run the risk of being problematic, as individuals.

I hope that clarifies and helps!

I appreciate that there are a lot of hurdles, and that I am being ambitious. But I would rather try and fail than not try at all, so long as no one gets hurt by my failure. And more, if I try and learn from the attempt, and find a way to succeed in a modified form, then that is also progress. If nothing else, I would rather try for everything and have to reduce my list and work with other moderators towards, well... moderation, than to create something that I will always be frustrated by. It is easier, I think, to start big and restrict down as needed, then to never try for anything big and always feel like you could have done more.

Anyway, that is my thoughts on the matter. And I appreciate yours.

I will say that if the pool of players starts small, that would be fine by me. Possibly even ideal, since I am still new to DW modding and a smaller player base will help me find my feet and iron out anything that we as mods missed the first time around. I believe in the concept enough that I feel like if we start small, interest will grow. And organic growth would be a wonderful long term goal.

Different Different Anon Here To Clarify

“da” isn’t actually their name. It stands for Different Anon, meaning that that anon is different than the anon above them.

Oh wow. Thank you, I had no clue. I appreciate it! Learned something new! :D

Same Anon (aka SA)

(Anonymous) 2022-06-13 03:25 am (UTC)(link)

You’re welcome!

Also, I think your heart’s in the right place here.

I agree with the other anons who are saying that you’re not really going about this the right way and that the game sounds pretty niche, but I also think your intent is good and I hope you’ll eventually find a way to make a game that you’ll enjoy modding and/or playing in and that your friends will feel comfortable in.

Thank you very much! I appreciate that. A great deal. Thank you.

that da here

(Anonymous) 2022-06-15 08:06 pm (UTC)(link)
hello, chicklet. no, we do not know each other, and as other anons have told you already (and I think you already knew), 'da' is just a header used in anoncomms, not a handle

i do hope that the many responses you have received over the past few days has educated you to the reality that, even if you do not see this sort of premise as treating players like children, that is how most of us will still take the idea of a game that so heavily restricts character behavior. as someone else here i believe already told you also, most of us in this hobby are adults or young adults. building a game specifically to avoid triggers is on its face a good goal, but when the triggers are this many and this common, again I think the market for it is going to be very limited if not nonexistent altogether

as to your efforts to recruit mods, speaking as a person who has known other would-be mods in your current position and been offered modship by them... it is easy to offer someone support on plurk. even if one thinks an idea is bad, is costs nothing to be polite, offer a few kind words of support and beg off any actual effort in the process. i can't say for sure if that is what is going on in your case, but I can say that none of my three friends who tried to make games happen like you are doing now got their games off the ground. they were each what I personally call 'vision mods', that is to say would-be mods that had aq vision for a game but no ability to organize and no head for the actual work of modding. you need a person like that, a 'work mod'. without that your game will not happen. and your vision as presented here is so restrictive that no work mod will find it appealing

i can understand wanting to make a game where canon OCs and CRAUs are welcome from the position of a person who enjoys those types of characters. but you in turn should try to understand why they are such an ostracized character type in the first place, and why so few games allow them. just about everyone in dwrp remembers 'renne', an infamous canon OC player from the late lj/early dw days who carried all their CR from every game into the next one and burdened players who did not know them with an OC who claimed interactions they had never participated in or necessarily wanted to. renne is the most infamous case, but there have been many canon OCs and CRAUs who played their characters in this pushy, force-CR-onto-others style. they are why the character type is largely persona non grata today, and by admitting them you are giving prospective players another reason to avoid your game

do you understand fully what I am saying about the problems with this game? you are trying to build a game around multiple problematic elements at once: offering second chances to players with bad reps (1), welcoming canon OCs and CRAUs when your players might not necessarily want that CR (2), and the heavily restrictive G-rated premise that prohibits elements most players have been comfortable with since they graduated from elementary school (3). just trying to make a game focused on one of these elements wouldn't be such a challenge, but all of them at once creates a premise that, to coin a phrase, has a little something to alienate everyone

i do apologize for sounding like a debbie downer here, i'm not trying to discourage you, just to tell you what kind of uphill battle you are facing. by walking back some of the more extreme restrictions you have proposed here and picking just one problematic element to try and rehabilitate, i do think you'll have a much greater chance of success. if you refuse to do that, then all i can say is best of luck to you.

Thank you very much for the response. Somehow this one never showed up in my inbox and I happened to see it when I was posting an update. So I appologize that I had not replied sooner.

I see your point about the uphill battle for sure. I never kidded myself that this wouldn't be, but I hadn't realized just how steep the hill. A lot of the responses here have given me a lot to think about in terms of restrictions, and other areas I had not considered where I clearly need answers I do not have. I am taking a step back to think about all of this and give it all the consideration it deserves; the consideration a mod needs to give it in order to provide a safe and fun environment for their players.

I can see what you are saying about CRAU and OCCRAU. And I can understand how a bad experience with that can be off putting. I can consider, at some distant future when I try this again if I do, setting up rules and structures for what is acceptable in those cases to help that. I did have one plan for this which was basically an AU thing, but that is a fiddly detail that is not currently relevant if I am reassessing everything as I am at this point. I will say that I do not want a few bad examples to ruin the possibility of fun for people who could and would play such characters responsibly, but I also want people who have dealt with irresponsible players to not have to fear a repeat. So while I am forming some ideas on that issue, I would want to run them by other people if and when the time is nearer, so that I have opinions other than my own to base things off of.

I do not think you sound like a Debbie Downer at all, if that helps. I thank you for the well thought out and detailed feedback. It is helping me wrap my head around the challenges so that I am better informed and better prepared in the future. And also gives me things to think about as a player who plays characters with a lot of CRAU. I believe I have always handled that respectfully, but now I can be more aware of myself going forward. I thank you for that as well.

I am not discouraged so much as... pensive. I suppose that would be a good word for it. I am also concerned that I have inadvertently hurt other people. I want to do whatever I can to make amends and to prevent myself from doing the same again. As I said, this whole thread has given me a lot to consider, and I intend to give it the time and attention it deserves.

Once again thank you so much for your feedback. It is exceptionally helpful and I very much appreciate it.
