February EMP Meme

ENABLEMEPLZ

meme goes up on the last Saturday of every month

FOR GAME ADS:

Put an ad up with the characters / crew / pairings / fetish you want for your game under the correct game header. This meme is primarily going to be focused on DWRP games but IJ and LJ games are allowed.

PLEASE NOTE A RULE CHANGE HERE. ABSOLUTELY NO obnoxious coding (no font size > size 4 or 3 "big" tags, no oversized banners (they must be 250px in height or less), no blinking text, no obnoxious table html that doesn't collapse easily, no sparklies, no large pictures). Use all the colors you like, but please remember 3 "big" tags is the limit and that's only for headers or title text rather than for all the text in an ad.

FOR GAME QUESTIONS:

RPers interested in a game can create a header for the game and ask questions about that game that aren't easy to find on faqs, such as the actual pace vs. what's listed/what kind of plots are run/if the game leans more towards plotty or slice of life/if a game leans more towards network or logs, etc. Both anon questions and anon answers are welcome in this section just like in the rest of the meme.

This thread is not for speaking about wank or drama in a game. There are anoncomms that exist for that. This thread is specifically for general questions about a game that rpers want to get perspective on from players already in the game. Answers can be slightly negative (such as saying app response is slow or that the plots are repetitive or similar things) but this should at least be worded politely. Unnecessary vitriol, any mention of personal drama or wank, or mod teams/individual mods/players being singled out, will be screened and/or deleted.

FOR CHARACTER ADS:

Put up an ad about the characters you are offering. For PSL/1-on-1 ads, there is a separate subthread but for character ads for games, post directly to the meme post. Others will comment to you with the games/casts they want you to join.

There is a "Find a Castmate" section, where you can talk about a cast you play in at a game, and try to lure people to join it. Not all games post to the meme or have a "wanted" section, so players that want to tempt people to their cast on their own can use this section for it. Please format this the same as the PSL/1-on-1 section, where you post the canons in your subject. For the actual text of the ad you must use the "Find a Castmate" form provided at the bottom of this post so that these ads don't get huge. When listing who's currently in a cast, please do this in sentence form (with commas) rather than in list form.

ABSOLUTELY NO obnoxious coding, with the same rules as the Game Ads Section above.

If you're recommending a game to someone, try to match your suggestion to their needs. It's okay if part of your game rec is copy-pasted (such as what the game's about), but at least some part of the rec must be personalized to their ad. Try not to recommend the same game to every single ad, either. Ad spam that isn't individualized in some way will also be screened.

IN GENERAL:

Don't be a dick. This isn't one of the anoncomms, so any snide comments or unnecessary commentary on the RP plans of others will be screened.

If there's trouble, tell me HERE, please!

Interest check for MMO jamjar

[personal profile] artoni 2019-02-24 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
Alrighty, so in a few months I'm probably going to end up starting a jamjar game with an MMO setting rip treasure planet; that is, surprise, you are now a character in an online game and can't log out. Loosely inspired by things like Snowcrash, Megaman.exe, .Hack, SAO, Tron, etc. 'Native' characters are there, they just think the PCs are just really in to roleplaying for some reason.

This is months in the future (especially since I've got some personal things going on RN - tentatively looking at May, though) but I'm mulling over concepts and wouldn't mind some input.

--AUs allowed to be apped as 'native' characters? OCs only? None at all, everybody must be jamjar'd in, all 'natives' are NPCs?
--I'm leaning towards the 'network' equivalent being message board text only- but regardless of the format, do the 'native' characters have access? Can they see?
--While we've figured out a 'bloodline'/class system, I have 0 interest in figuring out detailed skill lists (or equipment, or stats, etc) - at the same time, I don't want players immediately launching in to 'SO I'M MAX LEVEL NOW'. While I trust the majority of the DW playerbase to do things rationally, what are thoughts on AC rewards - insomuch as you gain a few levels every month, but extra AC gets you extra levels? (I've always been of the opinion that it seems iffy for people who only have so much time/spoons to RP, and I'm open for another system or just handwaving all of it.)

Anyway, thoughts/questions/comments can go here too, because why not.

I. LOVE. THIS. Without any more information to go on than this, I'm definitely willing to give some input and start a conversation, especially if I can help be a soundboard somehow.

- I say either let anyone app a character as a native or no one. Obviously, they have to be AU'd to fit into the setting, but I wouldn't limit it to just OC characters. But if you go this route, then you might want to consider allowing duplicates in the game, too. Like AU!Native!Goku and OU!Goku can be there at once. I can see how the logistics of this could seemingly fall apart and why this is a potential problem, though. If it helps, in practice, I haven't seen things like this turn into a big deal very often.

- I like a text-only network idea, perhaps allowing for voice or video in character inboxes or something. Regardless, about the natives, some games have "filters" that only allow the playing characters to see their posts, so you might want to consider something like that. Since this is a game based around the ideas of MMOs, it shouldn't be hard to ICly swing.

- I would consider looking at games like [community profile] melodiesofeternity who use AC and involvement in plots to base stats (ala the Jobs and how they motivate activity). The way it works there is that every event or player plot is worth a certain amount of exp, so if you participate, then you can put that earned exp towards learning a new skill. I remember that [community profile] thegames had a similar mechanic back in the day. The point, you don't have to get too in-depth about it as your player base will likely do that for you. What you can do is lay down the framework and let them play with it. I haven't seen your class system, of course, but it may work just as well.

Personally I love the idea of multiples/duplicates; my hesitance comes from the fact that it isn't a focus of the game. It's not so much 'here's a verse where you are something else!' as 'here's a verse where they think you're just another player!' I don't want it to become a driving factor in the game plot, if that makes sense, but I'm otherwise open to it.

Definitely leaning towards text; some of the other feedback I've gotten leads me to thinking about doing a monthly post in the meme comm that's all anon, and allows people to play at being natives, period; or natives posting on other things. Basically, filling out the forums, so to speak.

The class system is loosely grouped in to two spectrums; offense/defense, and physical/magic. Players pick one end of the spectrum while apping, and get access to two base classes; eg, the offense spectrum gives you the offense/physical of Rogue, and offense/magic of Mage. If you apped Physical, you get Rogue and the defense/physical of Soldier. For ease of grouping ICly - not that it'd work in an actual MMO - respeccing basically allows you to switch your class, and getting experience in both is key to the secondary/prestige class system. (Eg- leveling in both Soldier and Rogue with a focus in Offense leads to a secondary class access of Duelist, which has a couple Defensive aspects but is still very much Offensive. Vice versa, you get Knight). That way if we have two players, odds are one of them can switch to a Defensive (which includes healing/tanking)-style class, and the other can switch to an Offensive (for damage dealing).
IT'S VERY MUCH A HANDWAVEY SYSTEM but I'll take a look at those two games and see if I can draw some inspiration!

I'm really curious how you plan on starting a game, even a small one, when you've been in a game for years and literally do less than the bare minimum in it. Most months you take AC hits because you don't tag enough, other months you're on hiatus and scrape by, you're incredibly insular, and when you do tag nothing of value happens even among your castmates. If you can't even stay interested in what you're supposed to already be doing and for YEARS, how do you expect to open a game, mod, and presumably be a player in it with any amount of success?

Fair! I do have a history of being a flake, which is something I'm aware of and constantly battling with. It's certainly not something I'm proud of, either.

Of my current set: I know at one game is on the chopping block, but IIRC it's ending soon and I'd like to limp along to the end; if it's more than six months ahead, though, it's definitely worth revisiting and discussing with my castmates. If this is the one in question, I would like to say the last month is the first time I've taken an AC hit in quite a while - and my other current game in I'm making AC consistently. There's one more I'm looking at going back in to with a new character, who's less passive than the previous character I had, which definitely contributed to my failure rate.

Funnily enough, I'm not looking at actually playing in the game with an actual character, at least to start with; I'd focus on NPCwork and the rest. Arguably NPCs could be considered a character or two, but I'd like to see how the role goes of just being the proverbial DM as opposed to having an actual character in-game.

Aside from that I'm looking at having at least one or two co-mods. I don't want to shrug all the responsibility on to them, but I'm well aware of my own limits and don't think I can do this on my own.
